Congratulations

www.woodhey.bury.sch.uk
The Woodhey website can now be accessed through a new address: www.woodhey.bury.sch.uk. The site is aimed at pupils, staff, governors, parents, ex-pupils and prospective parents, and should be seen as a showcase for the school. The site is definitely ’work in progress’, but there are a number of sections that are of interest, providing pictures and more information about school events.

Car Parking
It would be greatly appreciated if parents would not park on Est Bank Road (the approach road to the school gate off Bolton Road West) or in the school grounds at the end of the day. The school buses have had difficulty picking up the pupils and the congestion has raised a Health and Safety issue for us. There is plenty of street parking not far from school for parents to use. The safety of all our pupils is of prime importance in this issue.
Thank you for your co-operation with this matter.

Medals Come Home
We were pleased to welcome the Mayor of Bury, Councillor John Smith, and his wife, Councillor Stella Smith, into school at 4 pm on Wednesday, 18 September. The library was packed with the 40 pupils who had participated in the Commonwealth Games Closing Ceremony, plus staff and parents. The Mayor presented medals and certificates to all those who had taken part in a stunning finale to an unforgettable Commonwealth Games.
Congratulations to all pupils who took part - in spite of all the rain! - and many thanks to Mrs Adeyemi for making it all possible.

Opening Doors
On Friday 30 August I was pleased to represent Woodhey at a special Open Day held at Darul Uloom, the training college for Islamic priests on Holcombe Hill. Staff and students of the college made all the guests very welcome, and provided us with a delicious spicy buffet, before we heard speeches from representatives of the college, David Chaytor MP, and the Bishop of Bolton. A visit to the prayer hall concluded what had been a most interesting and informative visit, another link in the chain of friendship developing between Woodhey and Darul Uloom.

Name that Uniform
Please could parents make sure that all uniform is named. We have so many ‘Lost Property’ items with no name in – often very expensive items too!
PB, Deputy Headteacher
Parents’ Surgery
Once a month, I will stay behind after school and hold a ‘surgery’ which is open to any parent who would like to discuss anything with me. No appointment is necessary and the meetings will be quite informal. Parents will be seen on a ‘first come, first served’ basis. Next term the meeting will be from 4.00 – 6.00 pm in the Library at school on Tuesday, 12 November .
These meetings are intended to be for parents who consider the usual channels inappropriate. The ’surgery’ is in addition to the current procedure, not a replacement for it.
Reminder: If you have a concern about your child the usual route is
- Contact the form tutor to discuss the situation.
- Contact the Head of Year to discuss the situation. From September 2002 the Heads of Year are Year 7 – Mrs Spokes, Year 8 – Mrs Bennett, Year 9 – Mr Turner, Year 10 – Mrs Macwilliam, Year 11– Mrs Clark.
- Contact the Head of Upper School (for pupils in Years 10 and 11) Mr Cutting
- Contact Mr Cutting – the Assistant Headteacher (Pastoral).
- Contact the Headteacher – Mr Braidley.
It would be extremely helpful if you would keep to this structure and not contact the more senior staff members directly, unless it is an emergency.

Swimming
For the third year running our swimmers have won the Bury Schools’ 4x1 Freestyle Relay which this year was held on Saturday, 5 October.
Our A team were first, B team 3rd and C team 5th. Many thanks to all 12 pupils and parents for your efforts.

Rugby Results
Having secured a higher level of fixtures for this season our teams have found life difficult so far. Although the results are disappointing staff are pleased with the attitude of their players. The year 9 team typified our enthusiasm by sending 27 players to Audenshaw. Hopefully no one is too down hearted.
All boys must continue to attend practices and aim to improve over the season.

‘Children helping Children’
Woodhey pupils have raised a staggering £600 this half term for a UNICEF campaign ‘Children helping Children’, to provide much-needed educational resources for youngsters in Afghanistan.
Pupils also ran a tuck-shop for Macmillan Nurses, raising a further £115, and on Wednesday 16 October Years 7, 8 and 9 held their harvest festival, after which we were able to send food parcels to many needy and elderly people in our community.
Years 10 and 11 are collecting money for ’Food Aid’, and donations for the Rotary Shoe Box Appeal.
We would like to thank you for supporting your children in these ventures: it is much appreciated.

Friends of Woodhey
Many thanks to all those who helped in any way with last year’s fundraising efforts. We had a very successful year in all, which enabled the school to purchase a new minibus.
We hope to continue this year with the help of staff, pupils and, of course, the parents, and have had a busy start to the new school year. Our welcome ‘Cheese and Wine’ evening for the parents of Year 7 was held at the end of September and was a good occasion for the parents and staff to meet.
We have many plans for the coming year, so look for details which will come home via the blue ‘Friends of Woodhey’ letters. We will soon be sending you details of our Christmas Decorations Evening , to be held next month at Summerseat Garden Centre. This is always a very popular evening, and we look forward to seeing you there.
The next meeting of the Friends of Woodhey is on Tuesday 19 November at 7.30 pm. Anyone who wishes to be involved in any way is welcome to come along.
Pam Garford, Chairperson
Year 7 Health and Safety Days
All pupils in Year 7 took part in the annual Health and Safety Days on Thursday, 19 and Friday, 20 September. Visitors from Greater Manchester Police, Health Promotion Unit and St John Ambulance talked to pupils about looking after themselves.
Further details and photographs are on the school website: www.woodhey.bury.sch.uk.

Drop Us a Line…
Please could I remind all parents and guardians that we would appreciate it if you could send us a brief letter of explanation if your child has to miss school for any reason at all. Letters requesting that pupils are taken out of school for a family holiday should be addressed to the Headteacher, and parents are respectfully reminded that leave of absence for holidays must be applied for by law.
Many thanks for your co-operation.
