MATHEMATICS

What will the subject cover?

Maths is split into four main areas: Number; Algebra; Shape, Space and Measures and Data Handling (Statistics). All courses have an equal emphasis on the latter two areas.

The Foundation course has a greater emphasis on Number than on Algebra.
The Higher course has a greater emphasis on Algebra than on Number.

How much coursework will there be?

None

How many exams will there be?

Two, in June of Year 11 (one calculator and one non-calculator), worth 50% each.

Are there different levels of papers?

Yes, there are two tiers,
Foundation, giving G to C grades
Higher, giving D to A* grades.

Can I study this subject at a different level from GCSE?

Yes. For those who may not gain a pass at GCSE level, it is possible to enter for Entry Level Certificate or an equivalent course. However, almost all pupils are able to gain a GCSE grade in Mathematics.

What skills and interests do I need to study this course?

Listening skills, perseverance, and regular attendance. Maths does not come easily to everybody, but every puzzle can be solved with perseverance. There is a clear hierarchy of skills, and absence or failure to listen early on in the course can cause problems later.

What careers would it be a good qualification for?

Maths provides a firm basis for most careers. Clear pathways are Accountancy, Engineering, Finance and Actuarial Work.



MATHEMATICS
STATISTICS GCSE

What will the subject cover?

The course aims to provide you with the skills in obtaining and analysing data in order to gain numerical information, and using this information to make useful predictions. The course will also provide the opportunity to gain a GCSE qualification that builds on the statistics content of the GCSE Mathematics specification. The ideas within the Statistics course are strongly connected with content in many AS and A2 level subjects, particularly Biology, Geography and Psychology, as well as Mathematics AS and A2 levels.


How much coursework will there be?

One piece to be completed throughout Year 10, worth 25% of final exam.

How many exams will there be?

One, in May or June of Year 11 the use of calculators is expected, worth 75%.

Are there different levels of papers?

Yes, the course is arranged in two tiers.

Foundation, giving G to C grades. (2 hours in duration)
Higher, giving D to A* grades. (2½ hours in duration)

Can I study this subject at a different level from GCSE?

No, you cannot.
