British Values & SMSC at Woodhey High School
At Woodhey High School, we strive to ensure that every student leaves prepared for life in modern Britain. Our approach to promoting Fundamental British Values and developing students’ Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural (SMSC) understanding is embedded across the curriculum, assemblies, pastoral structures and wider school life.
Fundamental British Values at Woodhey
We actively promote British values to help students understand their role within a diverse society. These values include:
- Democracy
- The Rule of Law
- Individual Liberty
- Mutual Respect
- Tolerance of Those with Different Faiths and Beliefs
Students develop their understanding of these values through:
- The Respect (PSHE and RSE) curriculum, which explores how British Values apply to everyday life,
- The wider curriculum and assembly programme, where themes of respect, tolerance and responsibility are reinforced,
- Opportunities such as the School Council, other leadership roles in school, and an active student voice programme, allowing students to participate in democratic processes and influence school decisions.
These experiences help pupils learn about respectful participation in society, personal freedoms, shared responsibilities and the importance of upholding the law.
SMSC at Woodhey High School
Woodhey recognises SMSC development as central to educating the whole child, supporting academic progress and personal growth. SMSC is visible across the Respect knowledge in Faculty schemes of learning, the Respect curriculum, careers education, and regular staff development led by Directors of Progress.
-
Spiritual Development
Students are encouraged to explore beliefs and values, reflect on their identity, appreciate the world around them, and use imagination and creativity within learning.
-
Moral Development
We help students recognise right and wrong, consider consequences, explore ethical issues and develop reasoned viewpoints.
-
Social Development
Students develop social skills in varied contexts, learn to collaborate effectively, resolve conflicts, and understand how communities operate.
-
Cultural Development
Students learn to appreciate cultural diversity, understand influences shaping different traditions, and celebrate the richness of a multi‑cultural society.
Connecting SMSC and British Values
Through our Respect Curriculum, students:
- Explore personal beliefs and values
- Learn to respect and appreciate diversity
- Develop empathy and a sense of social responsibility
- Understand the importance of democracy, liberty, law, respect and tolerance
Classroom and school expectations emphasise positive behaviour, responsibility and pride in achievement. Students learn how their actions affect others and are supported to value both themselves and their community.
