Students in Year 8 took part in our annual Be Safe Day, held in partnership with Bury Local Authority, to explore vital themes around personal safety, wellbeing and community awareness. The day brought together local organisations and experts to deliver engaging, thought-provoking sessions — all designed to help young people make positive choices and stay safe in everyday life.

The event opened with a powerful performance by Bury College Performing Arts students, who used drama to shine a light on important social issues faced by young people today. Their moving piece encouraged students to reflect on friendship, respect and making responsible decisions in challenging situations.
Next, representatives from Greater Manchester Transport led an informative session on transport safety. Students discussed real-life scenarios about travelling to and from school, using public transport responsibly, and being aware of potential risks when out in the community.

The Bury Youth Service delivered an important workshop exploring Safe and Unsafe Relationships. Through open discussion and interactive activities, students learned how to recognise signs of unhealthy behaviour, where to seek support, and how to look out for one another.

The Samaritans shared insights into their work and how they offer a listening ear for anyone struggling or feeling isolated. Their message that “it’s okay to talk” resonated deeply with many students and reminded everyone of the importance of kindness, empathy and reaching out.

Finally, Greater Manchester Police hosted a session on Crime Prevention, focusing on practical advice for staying safe online and in public spaces. Students were encouraged to think about how small, smart decisions can make a big difference in protecting themselves and others.

Be Safe Day was not only informative but empowering — giving students the confidence, awareness and tools to navigate the world safely and responsibly. A huge thank you to all the visiting organisations and to Bury Local Authority for their continued support in helping our students stay safe and make positive life choices.
